The winter season can be a challenging time for you to stay healthy. The temperatures have dropped, the days are short and you are stuck inside breathing dry, recirculated air. Long gone are those wonderful days of summer you spent on your boat breathing the fresh air.

Well, summer will come around again and you will find yourself back on your boat and enjoying life. In the meantime, mix a mug of hot chocolate and cuddle up by the fireplace and enjoy a good movie with the family.

Eat Healthy

You need to face some facts. In the winter, you probably don’t eat as healthy as you do in the summer. There is just something about comfort food that fills a void in the winter. You feel cold and lonely, so you eat mac and cheese.

And let’s not forget that winter is also the holiday season, which means plenty of sweets and other unhealthy choices.

Not that you have to stop eating all of your favorite foods, just make sure you are still eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It will help keep you healthy and happy.

Stay Active

Again, you have no problem staying active in the summer as you love to go boating and hiking, but that is a different story in the winter.

If we had to guess, you have probably memorized everything that is showing on Netflix and you have carved an indentation of yourself on the couch.

If you expect a healthy winter, turn off the television, get off the couch and get some exercise. If you don’t want to go to the gym, at least take a walk every day or do laps around your living room.

Wash Your Hands

The most well-known method of staying healthy in the winter is also very easy to do. Wash your hands with hot water and soap as often as you can and your chances for a healthy winter increase exponentially.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, germs can get on your hands from a variety of sources. All you have to do is touch a door handle, countertop or cell phone and you could come in contact with nasty germs that will give you a cold.

Washing your hands often will rid them of these germs and help keep you healthy.

Get a Shot

Flu season seems to get longer each year and it is a sickness you would rather avoid. One of the best ways to avoid getting the flu is to get a shot. Now, we know it is a bit of an inconvenience, but it will help protect you from getting the flu.

Get More Sleep

If you need another reason to get a good night’s sleep, this could be it.

Numerous studies have reported the many benefits of a good night’s sleep. While getting more sleep won’t prevent you from getting sick, a lack of sleep can and will negatively affect your immune system. Basically, it’s a great excuse to sleep in a little longer in the morning.

Avoid Risk Factors

It does sound obvious, but one of the best ways to stay healthy this winter is by avoiding common risk factors. Anybody who shows signs of a cold should be avoided, but do it as politely as you can.

Even if it is rather cold outside and it might be snowing, you should still do your best to get outside, even if it is just for a short period of time.

Getting some sunlight and fresh air will do your body a world of good.

Spices make your food taste great and many of them combat a number of conditions including heart disease and inflammation.
